Travel

Arlington, VA is convenient to many locations in the northeastern and southeastern United States by car. Parking is available just below the Research Center. You will be asked whether you will need a parking space when you register; the conference will cover parking for registrants who let us know by the deadline.

The location can be reached by train, by taking Amtrak lines to Alexandria or Union Station. The station code for Alexandria is ALX, and for Union Station is WAS. Amtrak's website can be found here: amtrak.com. The train trip from New York to Union Station or Alexandria is about four hours, and travel from Philadelphia to the DC area by train is about two and a half hours.

The Metro stop for the Research Center area is Ballston-MU Metro Station. It is 40 minutes by public transit from Union Station to Ballston-MU Metro Station, and about 35 minutes from Alexandria to Ballston-MU by metro.

It is approximately twenty minutes by taxi/car (depending on traffic, which in DC can be heavy) from the Alexandria Amtrak station or Union Station downtown to the Research Center.

The Arlington area is served by Dulles Airport (IAD), Reagan National Airport (DCA), and Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI). The closest to the venue is DCA, but Dulles has more flights available, and is the only option for international travel. BWI is farther away.

To get from Dulles to the Research Station, you first take the Silver Line Express Bus to Wiehle-Reston East Metro Station. The trip is about 15 minutes. You then take the Silver Line to Ballston-MU Station, which is about a 25 minute trip.

From DCA to Ballston-MU is about a 20 minute metro trip, with one transfer.

Both DCA and Dulles are about 30-40 minutes from the Research Center by taxi/car, depending very much on traffic. Guide to DC airports.

Public transit often is a better option than taxis/driving, especially if traffic is very heavy. It can turn a twenty minute trip into an hour of sitting in traffic.

The Research Center is served by the Orange and Silver metro lines, and, again, the closest stop is the Ballston-MU Metro Center. You can plan your trips in the DC area here: DC Transit Trip Planner.

For paper or poster presenters at the conference who qualify, and who do not have funding available from their own departments, the conference can book economy-class train and plane tickets in advance only. We can also reimburse mileage. Travel cannot be reimbursed after the fact.

When you register, please indicate that you would like travel and hotel reimbursed, and answer all relevant questions. Those who qualify, and who provide us with all required information by the deadline, will have at least a percentage of their expenses covered. There are limitations on the overall reimbursement, and reimbursement will depend on demand.
